Former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has already confirmed to the media that he would change his nationality just before the world cup for certain reasons.
The decision is believed to be in the best interests of his new employers Barcelona as the decision will help the Catalan outfit to do more transfer business in South America and with other non-EU players.
As one of the three non-EU players currently plying their trade with Barcelona, Coutinho is expected to make Brazil’s squad list for the summer World Cup staged in Russia this year.
As a rule, Barca won’t be allowed to do any more deals outside the EU despite having several scouts and representatives all over South America looking for the next football great.
On his own part, Coutinho has revealed to both the Barca setup and the media that he is set to take a huge responsibility upon himself by freeing up one space for another player to slot in. in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, he revealed how he will apply for a Portuguese passport.
“Yes, I can get citizenship through my wife.”
Aine, Coutinho’s wife is a Portuguese, making the Brazilian eligible to apply as a citizen of Portugal after three years of marriage.
However, the Barca star will not switch football allegiance to Portugal, and would represent his homeland barring any injury.
It should be recalled that Luiz Suarez did the same following his move from Liverpool to Barcelona in the summer of 2014.
